Blackburn Rovers refused Zinedine Zidane for Tim Sherwood

It was probably one of the biggest surprises in English football when the Blackburn Rovers brought the championship in the Premier League in 1995.

Coach-legend Kenny Dalglish, owner Jack Walker, who had come through shops with steel to his money, and midfield star Tim Sherwood were three crucial factors that made the success of the Rovers possible.

The then Scout, Gereck Fazackerley, had contacted the duo and convinced of a visit to England. "One looked at Zidane and thought what that is for an exceptionally good player," Fazackerley recalled at the Versed.

Coach Dalglish was also convinced of the potential of the duo and was already in principle with Bordeaux over a change from Dugarry and Zidane. But Dalglish had made the bill without the club leadership and owner Walker.

"Why should we want Zidane if we have Tim Sherwood?" Walker branished the famous words in Blackburn today in the direction of his coach. The transfer did not materialize.

Sherwood was then captain in Blackburn and absolute crowd pleasure in Ewood Park and Walker did not want to replace him through a young French talent. A decision that proved to be colossal misjudgment after a season.

While Blackburn sang and talllessly flew from the Champions League and came in the league only ranked seven, Zidane won in Ligue 1 the award for the best player of the season. When the Rovers had to compete for the course in Liga in 1999, Zidane was already twice a master in the series A and winner at the balloon d'Or. He was changed in the meantime to Juventus Turin and then shaped one of Real Madrid one of the most successful eras as a player in the "Galactic" team with David Beckham, Luis Figo, Ronaldo and Co.

Later, as a coach, he was able to build on the successes and won the Champions League with the royal three times in a row, which had previously made no other team yet.
